The Book Culture Club held its 12th event in the Library on the evening of 10th November. Prof. Mak King Sang welcomed the participants, introducing the veteran sociologist Prof. K.B. Chan to speak on the theme “I have something to say: the works and words of a sociologist”.
Prof. Chan talked about his wide research interests including international migration, race and ethnic relations, family and marriage, hybridity, creation and innovation etc. He shared his insights about how he views migration, both from his own personal experience and from research. His passion in writing and publishing experience were also addressed in his talk. He relates writing to keeping himself awake and helping him remain young at heart in order to narrow the generation gap with the students.
Dr. Lo Wai Luk, the guest speaker then moved the topic towards qualitative and quantitative aspects in conducting social surveys. While surveys are a commonly used method to study the society, he remarked that data should be analyzed with an impartial approach.
Two publishers were invited to talk about experience in publishing Prof. Chan’s books. Mr. Lai Yiu Keung, Manager of the Publishing Dept of Chung Hwa Books Co. and Mr. Alex Chan, Sales Executive of Springer Asia Ltd. were delighted to launch Prof. Chan’s books. Mr. Lai also described Prof. Chan as a good teacher who always helps his students in publishing research outputs.
