SMCL Space Enhancement

SMCL is now CLOSED for renovation.
Please proceed to our temporary services counter on 1/F, CIE Building for library services.

To enhance campus facilities, improve accessibility and create a more vibrant and welcoming space for everyone, SMCL will undergo a major renovation starting in December 2024. The entire SMCL will be closed from 22 December 2024 onwards and the renovation is expected to be completed by Summer 2025.

This page will serve as a central hub for information relating to the renovation project and will be updated regularly. We thank everyone at HKBU in advance for their patience and understanding!

Please note: The above dates are subject to change depending on the actual progress of the project. Any changes will be announced as soon as possible.

How will this affect you?

⛔️ No access to Level 4, CIE Building

The entire level 4 of the CIE building will be closed to all users until the renovation is completed.

⛔️ Limited access to SMCL collection

Most of the SMCL collection will be packed into boxes and sent to storage during the renovation period.

What action(s) should you take?

For academic staff

• Borrow books you may need for the next semester NOW.
• Communicate with the Library early about the teaching materials required for the next semester.
• Share this news with your students and colleagues so they are aware of the arrangements before the renovation starts.

For students

• Borrow books you may need for the next semester NOW.

Other mitigation actions by the Library and CIE

• A temporary reading area has been set up on 1/F for student use.
• A temporary Library User Services Counter will be set up during the renovation.
• Promote our existing Inter-branch library loan and HKALL services that allow users to obtain materials from HKBU libraries and other institutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What are the areas to be renovated?

The entire 4/F of the CIE building will be closed for renovation from 22 December 2024 until Summer 2025. Library services will be offered at a temporary service counter. Please approach library staff early if you have enquiries or have any special needs on using Library resources during Semester 2, AY24/25.

❓ Can I still borrow books on the Shek Mun Campus during the Library renovation?

Yes. The borrowing and returning service will remain available via our temporary service counter. If your wanted item is not available on the Shek Mun Campus, you can request them from other HKBU Libraries or JULAC libraries and pickup at our temporary service counter.

❓ What can I do if the book I want to borrow is currently on loan?

You can recall the book via the Library’s OneSearch system. When a book is recalled, the current borrower will need to return the book within two weeks. For more details, please visit the Request Materials page on the Library website.

❓ Are there other study spaces I can use?

Yes. Please feel free to use the following study spaces:

• Reading area on 1/F and collaboration cabins on various floors of the CIE Building
• Learning Commons (1/F, CIE Building)
• HKBU Main Library and Chinese Medicine Library (at Kowloon Tong Campus)
