The Archives on the History of Christianity in China (AHC) is a rich collection of materials from the 19th century that support research on Protestant missions and missionaries, regardless of denominations, in the Greater China region, in particular China and Hong Kong. Information about the activities of the Catholic Church is also collected. The Archives consists of over 8,500 books and serials, 29,000 microforms, pictorial materials and missionary letters and documents, with a number of supporting e-resources (See Subject Guide). As the Library’s flagship special collection, the Archives continues to be actively developed. A brochure for the Archives is available here.

As a result of ongoing digitization efforts, users can now access:

  • Books and serials in AHC published before 1920
  • Pictorial materials including lantern slides taken by missionaries from the China Inland Mission in the 1920s, postcards, posters and maps on the Library’s Art Collections platform
  • Over 30,000 newspaper clippings about Christianity in China between 1950 and 1976. They are selected from clippings originally from the Union Research Institute
  • About 1,800 books and 60 serials which are publications from churches and Christian organizations in Hong Kong and Taiwan, digitized under a collaborative project “Preservation for the Documentation of Chinese Christianity
