The Contemporary China Research Collection was established in 1985 with materials purchased from the Union Research Institute (友聯研究所) as the foundation of the collection. While most of the collection are now part of the Library’s general collection, over 4,000 pamphlets as well as over three million indexed newspaper clippings and periodical articles are housed in Special Collections and Archives.
Between 1950 and the 1970s the Union Research Institute collected clippings from about 230 Chinese language newspapers and 40 periodicals published in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. These clippings are organized by broad subjects, with a large part of the clippings having been microfilmed. Click here to see the subject categories and microfilm listing.
In addition, over 200,000 clippings have been indexed with original texts made accessible as copyright allows on the Library’s newspaper clippings database 華人剪報資料庫. They cover the following topics in the specified periods:
- Overseas Chinese, 1950-1971
- Situation of Hong Kong and Macau, 1950-1973
- Higher education in China, 1950-1954
- Cultural issues in Taiwan, 1950-1954
- Contemporary China (1992-1998; these were collected by the Library)
