Celebrating International Open Access Week @ HKBU Library
21-27 October 2024

International Open Access Week is a yearly event that promotes Open Access (OA) and encourages the academic and research community to learn more about it, fostering participation and sharing of knowledge.

SPARC defines Open Access as:

“the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment. Open access ensures that anyone can access and use these results – to turn ideas into industries and breakthroughs into better lives.”

Open Access Week

“Community over Commercialization”

The theme of this year’s International Open Access Week is “Community over Commercialization.” This theme highlights methods of open access that prioritise approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of public and academic community. Learn more about this year’s theme.

In the spirit of “Community over Commercialization,” we highlight some of HKBU Library’s locally grown and community generated open access initiatives, showcasing and sharing scholarship, art, and creativity.

HKBU Scholars

Explore researchers, scholarship, and more, to discover contributions to HKBU’s research excellence.

HKBU Scholars is a portal that, among other things, makes HKBU research papers and books freely available to the world using green Open Access. Green OA is scholarship that authors share through their own websites and discipline or institutional repositories, like HKBU Scholars. Many scholarly publishers offer the option to share work in this way; however, there are usually restrictions around the version and timing of the publication of the respective paper.

Consider sharing your paper with the world using green OA! The Library can help – please contact our Digital Initiatives and Research Cluster to learn more about your options.

Digital Scholarship Projects

These projects use digital technologies to extend the life of scholarly sources and create research tools, with a view to facilitating information sharing and new research findings. HKBU Library collaborates with HKBU researchers to present research in creative and engaging ways through projects that are widely accessible and freely available around the world. For example:

A new highlight is that you can now search across our numerous digital projects.

You can also explore our unique Chinese Medicine Digital Projects.

HKBU Library Art Collections

Did you know that HKBU Library has some amazing art collections?  These collections have been digitized and made freely available online. Highlighted collections include:

Images from the collections can often be made available for printing for personal and educational use through agreement with the Library, based on Creative Commons licensing. This varies, however, depending on the copyright of a particular work. Learn more and contact us.

Not only can Open Access raise the visibility of research and citations, but it also advances equity in knowledge, public engagement, and lifelong learning. Overall, it promotes a more equitable and informed society, expanding, while at the same time creating, Community over Commercialization.
