Issue 12

Jun 2022

Editor’s note

Here comes summer and it signals the time of graduation.

Most of us have worked hard in the past academic year while keeping up with the changing COVID-19 arrangements, some of you may be just starting your studies right now. New policies hardly surprise us anymore. Whichever group you are in, we hope this issue will relax you with cats, stories, discounts, and upcoming enhancements to OneSearch.

This issue will start off with cute cat photos from a cat lover, who is also our newest librarian at HKBU Library. After that are short stories and poetry produced by university students around the globe, including HKBU’s. You can read them online! Learning of course does not stop after graduation, it is just getting started. For those of you who are graduating this year, we are providing discounts on some of the Graduate Services Packages so you can continue accessing the Library’s resources. Last but not least, the Library system will be upgraded in July. Get ready for some new features in OneSearch!

Now, read on and have a great summer.

Introducing our new Resource Management Librarian – Becky Wu

Greetings from Becky, the new Resource Management Librarian. It’s my pleasure to join the HKBU family!

I have worked in the Library field for over 13 years. My major duties include library materials acquisition, collection review, and budget management. I also work closely with liaison librarians and faculty members. I usually stay at the office on Level 6.

Besides being a librarian, I am also a cat lover. I have three cats named Simba (辛巴), Baron (男爵), and Caesar (凱撒). It’s a great opportunity for me to share my cats’ photos with you. My cats are now on the Library Newsletter!

Even though the Library has rich collections of electronic resources, don’t forget that we also have over a million physical items. Please come and visit. See you in the Library soon 🙂

Long Story Short Award 2022

What is in the whole of Asia that you can only find at HKBU Library?

The answer is…

.
.
.

The Short Story Dispenser!

We were the first in Asia to acquire a short story dispenser and we remain the sole venue with a dispenser in Asia. This makes us (still) the only representative in the Asia region in the Long Story Short Award, organized by the dispenser company Short Edition.

The Long Story Short Award (LSSA) is an annual inter-university writing competition. This year, it was open for submission from 17 January to 21 February. Besides prizes for the winning student writers, the institution that had the most submissions gets a free short story dispenser. Brigham Young University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill both have the highest submissions rate of 135 each. It is especially encouraging to see how UNC-Chapel Hill had only a dozen submissions in the previous round and they sprang back as one of the institutional winners! They have motivated me to work harder in getting more submissions next time, if they can do it, so can we!

Having the competitive spirit while enjoying the process of creative writing is what I hope our student writers received from the LSSA experience. Although HKBU is not the institutional winner this time, nor were our students were selected as juried or public winners, I am happy to see such a high participation rate this year. Back in the 2020 round, we had only 16 submissions, and we had 43 this year! My thanks to all of the talented HKBU student participants, and the teachers who encouraged their students to take part in this competition.

I look forward to the next Long Story Short Award and to reading the stories by HKBU students!

Exciting new OneSearch features coming in July!

The Library system will be upgraded and moved to a new platform on 4 July 2022. The interface of OneSearch will look the same but there will be enhancements to help you discover what the library collection has to offer.

Collection Discovery

From the top menu bar, you will find a new tab called Collection Discovery that serves as a gateway to the Library’s special collections. The collections are grouped in various themes, informed by students’ information needs and the unique resources held by the Library.

Journals

Sometimes it is a bit challenging to locate the journals you need from the vast catalogue. The new Journals A-Z will help you to discover a concept by browsing the subject classifications. What’s more, you can search for articles within a journal using the search box without going to the journal website!

Moreover, the coverage information of e-journals will be made more visible in the search result list.

Got a problem?

You can always let us know about any problems you have when accessing a record using the “Report a problem” link. To make the link more visible, it has been re-positioned to the right-hand side.

Hope you find the new features helpful in navigating our collection!
