What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a plagiarism detection and prevention platform used by schools and universities around the world. This software can compare submitted academic assignments against an extensive database of published and unpublished information, and provide a report on the degree of similarity between the assignment and the material in that database.

According to guidelines issued by the University, the primary purpose of Turnitin is educational. Students should therefore be allowed to submit their assignments to Turnitin and review the similarity report prior to final submission for marking.

Library support for Turnitin

To ensure that interested students are able to submit their assignments to Turnitin, the Library maintains a practice Turnitin Assignment in a designated course site on HKBU Moodle and SCE Moodle.

Select your Moodle site to self-enroll in the course and access the Turnitin Practice Assignment:

Plagiarism checking for faculty work

Turnitin is designed for the checking of student assignments. For their own research work, faculty should make use of iThenticate instead.
