New E-Resources: The Presbyterian Messenger

The Presbyterian Messenger

The Presbyterian Messenger compiles 19th century records of missionary work by the Presbyterian Church of England in the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan, documenting their experiences and reporting back to their parent churches. The Presbyterian Church of England began its missionary work in the Chinese Mainland in 1847, and this database includes records of the work of various missionaries in Xiamen, Shantou, and southern Taiwan, as well as records from 1881 onwards in Singapore and Malaysia. In addition to documents concerning Taiwan, it also includes missionary records from the Chinese Mainland, the Indian subcontinent, and the Mediterranean region of Europe, totaling over 32,000 entries. It serves as a critical historical resource for researching early Protestant missions and colonial history in East and Southeast Asia.
