What are Course Readings?

These are readings/study materials designated by a member of the teaching faculty for use by students enrolled in a specific academic course.

Items in print or multimedia format are kept at the User Services Counter for borrowing for a short loan period (4, 12, 24, or 48 hours). Online materials are available on demand, and are accessed via the Library website.

How do I find Course Readings?

You can search course readings via the Library homepage: 

a) Library Homepage – Course Readings – Course Search Interface 

b) To find the course readings for a specific course, you may either browse the course list or enter course details (e.g. course code / course name / instructor name / department code) into the search box:

How do I borrow / access Course Readings?

* Please return all the borrowed course reading materials to the user services counter of the items’ home library. 
** Items on 4-hour loan can be checked out for overnight use within four hours before closing, and they must be returned at the opening time on the next Library opening day. 
*** Depending on publisher restrictions, e-books listed as course readings may only allow a limited number of concurrent online readers.

How do I submit a request to designate items as Course Readings for my course?

Teaching faculty are welcome to submit their requests either via our online form or by sending the completed paper form via campus mail with “Course Reading Request” indicated on the envelope to the particular library (e.g. Main Library, Chinese Medicine Library, or Shek Mun Campus Library) where you would like the items to be held. 

Processing time

It normally takes 5 working days to process Course Reading requests. More time may be required during peak seasons (i.e. in the weeks immediately before/after the start of the semester). 

Deposit policy

Course readings (both printed and online readings) that are not renewed for course use (usually after the end of the semester/academic year), will be removed from the Course Readings Collection as follows: 

  • Personal print copies obtained from course instructors will be returned to them
  • Library print materials will be returned to the general circulating collection
  • Links to online readings will be removed from the Course Readings system
